Do Something About Stress

We all know that stress, over time, will affect health, confidence and performance.  It’s ok to have a tough week every now and then.  But when it’s more than that, it’s time to sit up and take notice.  Do nothing and what started as a string of disappointments can develop into depression.

At first, you may not notice that you laugh less or grumble more.  Or that your reactions take on a muted hew.  

So, you know you’re stressed/unhappy/fed up.  Now what?

Do Nothing is always an option.  But one that needs to be examined just as carefully as deciding upon action.  When you already know something’s not working for you, continuing as-is means that you are choosing unhappiness.  Your confidence dwindles and you start to doubt whether you can, in fact, do any better. Who wants that?  When your habit is to simply react to other people’s choices, you build frustration, feel hard-done by or even helpless.  That sense of helplessness can lead you into depression. Choosing to Do Nothing because in the short term it makes best sense is very different to doing nothing because you think it’s easier/can’t decide what to do instead/don’t have the confidence to do what you’d really like to do.  So, be completely honest with yourself about your Do Nothing motives.

Taking positive action means that you will regain control.  Instigate a conversation, put forward a request or implement a change to show yourself that you can take control.  What matters here is that you are taking action.  You can’t be certain whether your ideas will be acted upon.  The important thing is that you are doing something positive.  Notice your reactions, both internally and externally in situations and whether those serve you well.  You can learn to react differently and improve your emotional intelligence so that negotiating your way in trying circumstances becomes less stressful.  Your confidence will return. If there are major decisions to be made, you will feel more able to handle those. You’ll start to feel happier.  And that’s what you want, isn’t it?  

When we operate from a place of choice we create a sense of freedom and power within ourselves.  Hold that with integrity and it’s hard to go wrong.
